KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS BEAT DECCAN CHARGERS BY 11 RUNS IN THE FIRST MATCH OF IPL-3

Angelo Mathews:Man of the Match

Charl Langeveldt was there in IPL-2 but he was given a chance only in the last match of the tournament. But as a brilliant captain, Ganguly has a clear idea about his playing XI. Even though he failed miserably with bat, his clever bowling changes did the trick for Kolkata Knight Riders.

After winning the toss, Deccan chargers decided to field first. Chaminda Vaas made magic with his first ball as KKR’s debutant opener Manoj Tiwary went for a duck. The stadium stunned when Skipper Sourav Ganguly was deceived by late swing, edging to Anirudh in the slips three balls later. At that time the scorecard was 0/2. Next batsman Cheteshwar Pujara broke the shackles with a crisp cover drive, but gives away his wicket to R.P. Singh. Jaskaran Singh Bhuttar overcame stage fright in his first over with the valuable wicket of Brad Hodge off the next, inducing the Aussie to slash into Gibbs's hands at point. Then the stadium witnessed an unbeaten fine partnership of 130 runs between England's Owias Shah and Angelo Mathews(Sri Lanka) who scored 58(46 balls, 3 fours, 3 sixes) and 65 runs(46 balls, 4 fours, 4 sixes) respectively. Thus, despite losing 4 wickets for 31, Kolkata Knight Riders managed to score a formidable target of 161/4 in the stipulated 20 overs.

Chasing a victory target of 162, Deccan Chargers were cruising towards victory, as they were 88/1 in 10 overs. VVS Laxman who opened the innings scored valuable 22 runs (14 balls, 2 fours, 1 Six).Gilchrist was the top scorer for Deccan Chargers with 54 off 35 balls(3 fours, 3 sixes) . Hodge got him eventually, caught by Manoj Tiwary on the fence. Rohit Sharma (13 off 12 balls) took on the scoring duties but he fell to Mathews by playing an immature shot. Andrew Symonds could only manage to score 5 runs. Ishanth got the price wicket of this Aussie star. Ganguly used six bowlers, all of them chipped in with wickets. Langeveldt got two for 26 and the others (Ishant, Laxmi Rathan Shukla, Hodge, Angelo Mathews, Murali Karthik) managed a wicket.

Deccan Chargers who were in a commanding position most of the times of the match finally finished at 150/7 and lost the match to Kolkata Knight Riders, which finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2.
